- Cruz Reynoso was born and grew up as one of 11 children in Orange County, California. His father was a fruit picker. He graduated from Pomona College in 1953, and then served two years in the army. After the army he graduated from the University of California Law School, Boalt Hall, and started to practice in El Centro, CA. In the years that followed he was a legislative assistant, the deputy director of the California Fair Employment Practices Commission, the director of Rural Legal Assitance, and a professor at the University of New Mexico Law School. He was appointed to the California Court of Appeals in 1976, and to the California Supreme Court in 1982. Along with several other liberal justices, he was voted off the California Supreme Court in 1986. Since then he has been in private practice, and taught at UCLA and UC Davis Law Schools, and served as vice-chairman of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. In 200 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom
