Summary
"This lesson relies upon the assumption that the lawyer needs to be well versed in the use of legal research tools in order to construct a sound legal argument. The lesson, using a lawyer-under-construction theme, takes the law student on as an apprentice and introduces him or her to the basics of effective legal research. The content initially covers several concepts that are important for the novice researching the law to understand. It further describes the basic research tools used in law libraries and how the student might begin to research the law using them. Each major portion of the lesson alternates between the use of descriptive text and problem sets to illustrate various concepts and reinforce them. The lesson is divided into four parts, an introduction and three instructional portions, each of which build upon the lawyer-under-construction theme. The first instructional portion, "Examining the Blueprints," explains some of the differences between researching the law and other library research experiences the student may have had. Next, the "Gathering the Tools" part introduces the various tools of their trade - the basic primary and secondary resources - or those materials students will be working with on site in the law library. Finally, the "Approaching the Construction Site" portion provides some review exercises and final points before sending the student to the library to break ground. Legal Research 101: The Tools of the Trade is primarily intended for first year law students. It is most appropriate for law students during their first semester and would also be useful in paralegal studies. The lesson presumes no prior knowledge of how to do legal research. Because of its intended audience, the lesson is written in a simplistic and general manner and does not cover all of the subtleties involved in legal research. It is, therefore, not intended for the advanced legal researcher, except perhaps as a refresher"-- CALI lessons subject list
