Lawrence P. King earned his LL.B. from New York University (NYU) in 1953 and his LL.M. from the University of Michigan in 1957. He joined the faculty at NYU School of Law in 1959, where he was named the Charles Seligson Professor of Law in 1963. His specialites were commercial and bankruptcy law. He was well known as an editor of Collier on bankruptcy. King gave frequent speeches and participated in seminars and educational programs featuring bankruptcy legislation. He also served in a number of capacities in many professional organizations. From 1968 to 1986 he was a member of the Judicial Conference of the United States Advisory Committee on Bankruptcy, acting as reporter from 1979-1983. He played leadership roles on several committees of the National Bankruptcy Conference, including the Committee on Legislation where he served as Chairman. He was an Associate Reporter for the American Law Institute and a consultant to the Commission on the Bankruptcy Laws of the United States. At his death in 2001 he was known appropriately as "the King of Bankruptcy."
