  • "In order to prevent or at least mitigate a 'hold-up' of the standardisation process, caused e.g. through a demand of excessive royalties, most SSOs [i.e. standard-setting organisations] require their members to grant licenses of their patents, which are essential to the standard, under (Fair) Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory (RAND or FRAND) terms. For this thesis RAND (normally used in the US) and FRAND (the common term in Europe) will be understood as synonyms."--P. 1
