  • First published in the Georgia advertiser, Augusta, in August, 1821, in response to a series of articles by the "Trio" appearing in a Milledgeville, Ga., newspaper in July, 1821
  • Two states of gathering A noted. In the first, the population of South Carolina is reported (p. [1], 2nd count, lines 36-37) as "280,000 white inhabitants, and 260,000 slaves." In the second, the figures are corrected to "257,000 white inhabitants, and 315,000 slaves."
  • Two states of gathering B noted. The second state has a footnote at foot of p. 16, not present in the first state. To accommodate the footnote, the first two lines on p. 16 of the first state have been moved to p. 15 of the second state
  • Two states of gathering C noted, with and without an errata statement on p. 22. The errata statement corrects the population figures on p. [1], 2nd count
