In Birmingham, Alabama on Sunday morning, Sept. 15, 1963, in the midst of civil rights struggles, dynamite planted in the basement of the 16th St. Baptist Church exploded, killing Denise McNair, Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson and Cynthia Wesley.
